Ugandan musician Weasel Manizo has revealed that he received UGX285,000 in royalties from the Uganda Performing Right Society (UPRS) after approximately one and a half years of airplay.
The singer shared the figure while discussing music royalties, saying the payment covered about 18 months during which his music received significant airplay.
The revelation has sparked fresh debate within Uganda’s music industry over royalty collection and distribution, with many artists continuing to question whether the current system provides fair compensation for the use of their music.
UPRS is responsible for collecting and distributing royalties to musicians and other rights holders for the public performance and broadcast of their copyrighted works in Uganda.
