The International Crimes Division (ICD) of the High Court in Wandegeya has granted bail to National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy President for Central Uganda Muwanga Kivumbi and his co-accused, who are facing terrorism-related charges.
Kivumbi appeared before court alongside his co-accused for the bail ruling after spending more than five months in custody.
The accused had applied for bail, arguing that the offences they are charged with are bailable and that their continued detention was linked to delays in investigations.
The court granted Kivumbi a cash bail of Shs10 million, while each of his co-accused was granted cash bail of Shs1 million.
The bail hearing attracted attention from NUP supporters and legal representatives, with lawyer Sam Muyizzi Mulindwa engaging with the proposed sureties before the ruling at the ICD Court in Wandegeya.
Kivumbi and his co-accused were arrested in January 2026 following a security operation at his home in Butambala District, during which several people were reportedly killed.
They were later charged with terrorism-related offences.
The court deferred the bail ruling for six other accused persons after their sureties were found unsuitable.
NUP leaders and supporters welcomed the decision, with Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya saying the ruling was a positive step while continuing to call for the release of other detained party members.
The development comes amid ongoing debate over the detention of opposition figures and calls from NUP supporters under the hashtag #FreeOurPeople.
