Kampala, Uganda

President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Hon. Dr John Chrysostom Muyingo as the Acting Minister of Education and Sports.

The appointment places Dr Muyingo in charge of the Ministry of Education and Sports in an acting capacity, where he will oversee day-to-day leadership and coordination of education sector policies.

The announcement was made on Thursday, with reports circulating across official and media platforms indicating that President Museveni had assigned Dr Muyingo to take on the acting ministerial role in the Education and Sports ministry.

Muyingo assumes the role following the appointment of First Lady Janet Museveni as minister in the recent Cabinet reshuffle. Janet has, however, not yet taken the oath of office after reportedly being indisposed since March 2026, according to Museveni.

Dr John Chrysostom Muyingo is a veteran educationist and politician who currently serves as Minister of State for Higher Education. He has previously held senior positions within the education sector, including overseeing key aspects of higher education policy and administration in Uganda.

President Yoweri Museveni, who holds constitutional authority to appoint and assign cabinet ministers, made the decision as part of ongoing administrative adjustments within government.

The Ministry of Education and Sports is one of the largest and most sensitive government ministries, responsible for education policy, schools, universities, and sports development across the country.

Any change in leadership particularly at ministerial level can influence the coordination of national examinations, school administration, and ongoing education reforms.

In Uganda’s cabinet structure, an acting minister is temporarily assigned to head a ministry when the substantive minister is unavailable or during a transition period. The acting minister exercises executive authority but usually serves on an interim basis until a permanent appointment is made.

Dr Muyingo has been a central figure in Uganda’s education sector for years. Prior to his current position, he served in various roles including Minister of State for Primary Education and later Higher Education.

His background as an educator and former school administrator has shaped his long-standing involvement in education policy and institutional development.
