The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has met with the leadership of Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda to discuss the ongoing closure and security deployment at its media outlets, including NTV Uganda and the Daily Monitor.

The meeting, held at the Special Forces Command (SFC) headquarters in Entebbe, was attended by NMG owner Rostam Aziz, his son Saam Aziz, and Georgia Mutagaywa, Chief of Staff of Taarifa Limited, the parent company associated with NMG’s operations in Uganda.

The discussions centered on the continued closure of the media houses and the security presence at their premises. However, neither side disclosed the outcome of the meeting or whether any agreement had been reached regarding the resumption of operations.

The meeting comes days after security personnel sealed off NMG’s offices, disrupting the operations of NTV Uganda, the Daily Monitor, and other company outlets.

On Tuesday, the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Justine Lumumba Kasule, said the deployment at Nation Media Group’s premises had been authorised by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as part of an ongoing security-led investigation.

Addressing journalists, Lumumba said the disruption of operations on June 28, 2026, resulted from a security inquiry initiated by the President.

“The events of 28th June 2026 that led to the disruption of operations at Nation Media Group were occasioned by a security-led inquiry instituted by His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda,” Lumumba said.

The closure has sparked widespread debate over media freedom and the role of security agencies, with journalists, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders calling for clarity on the investigation and the reopening of the affected media outlets.

As of publication, neither the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) nor Nation Media Group Uganda had issued a detailed statement on the outcome of the meeting or indicated when normal broadcasting and publishing operations would resume.
