Police in Mukono Municipality are investigating a case of aggravated theft after smooth-talking scammers tricked a housemaid into granting them access to a home, taking off with millions in cash, electronics, and a firearm.
The incident, which occurred on July 1, 2026, at Upper Nabuti Cell in the Central Division of Mukono Municipality, has prompted law enforcement to issue a stern warning to the public about home security and domestic staff awareness.
According to police spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma, the unidentified suspects used manipulation rather than forced entry to breach the residence. The criminals approached the housemaid and claimed they had been sent by the homeowner to pick up a faulty television set for repair. Believing the story, the unsuspecting maid let them inside.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that unknown suspects used deception to gain access to the victim’s residence after convincing the housemaid that they had been sent by the homeowner to collect a faulty television set for repair,” a statement from Police said.
Once inside, the thieves dropped the repair pretense and ransacked the house. The suspects made off with UGX 10 million in cash, three television sets not the single faulty one they claimed to be repairing, a metallic safe, which police confirmed contained a licensed pistol, a mobile phone and the home’s CCTV digital video recorder (DVR), a calculated move to erase any footage of their faces or getaway vehicle.
Police say the stolen property was loaded into a white Toyota Noah before the suspects fled the scene.
Detectives have visited and documented the scene, and a hunt for the suspects is underway. Investigators are looking into whether the thieves had inside information, given their apparent familiarity with the home’s layout and the location of valuables.
Police has urged homeowners to sensitize domestic workers, security guards and children to never let strangers onto the premises without direct, explicit confirmation from the property owner, warning that criminals are increasingly using deception rather than force to gain entry into homes.
