The driver of a Kakise bus involved in a serious road crash has died after succumbing to injuries sustained in the accident, authorities and eyewitnesses have confirmed.
The driver, identified as Alfred Ekong, was critically injured when the bus crashed into a bridge after he reportedly swerved to avoid hitting a pedestrian.
Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred as residents had gathered nearby to watch a FIFA World Cup football match. During the gathering, a fight allegedly broke out among a group of young men, causing panic in the area.
According to witnesses, one of the youths ran onto the road while being chased by others. In an apparent attempt to avoid knocking him down, Ekong steered the bus away from the pedestrian but lost control of the vehicle before crashing into a bridge.
“The bus driver tried to avoid hitting the pedestrian but lost control of the vehicle before crashing into the bridge. The accident happened in front of many people here. We may not blame the driver; he was trying to avoid hitting a man who was being chased,” one eyewitness said.
Emergency responders rushed the injured driver to hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The crash has renewed concerns about road safety and the dangers posed by pedestrians unexpectedly entering busy roads, particularly during large public gatherings.
Authorities are expected to examine witness accounts and other evidence to establish the full sequence of events leading to the fatal crash.
The death of Alfred Ekong has prompted an outpouring of condolences from members of the community, many of whom described him as a professional driver who appeared to have taken evasive action in an effort to save a life.
