Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has said discussions are underway regarding the possible reopening of NTV Uganda and Daily Monitor, days after the Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda outlets were taken off air.
In a post published on his official X account, Gen. Muhoozi said consultations were being held with what he described as Uganda’s “allies in the UK and Europe.”
“As comrade AndrewMwenda said, we are having discussions with our allies in the UK and Europe about re-opening both NTV and Daily Monitor. We shall take the results of these discussions to Mzee for final approval,” Gen. Muhoozi posted.
The reference to “Mzee” is widely understood to mean President Yoweri Museveni, although Gen. Muhoozi did not mention the President by name.
The statement followed comments by journalist Andrew Mwenda, who had indicated that discussions with Gen. Muhoozi had yielded plans to reopen the two media outlets.
The developments had raised fresh hope for the resumption of operations at NTV Uganda and Daily Monitor.
Nation Media Group Uganda’s outlets were taken off air following a military operation that affected several of the company’s platforms, including NTV Uganda, Spark TV, KFM, Dembe FM, Daily Monitor, and The EastAfrican.
Armed soldiers were also deployed at the company’s headquarters in Namuwongo and at the NTV/Spark TV broadcast centre.
Gen. Muhoozi has not provided a timeline for when the outlets could resume operations, nor has he disclosed the outcome of the discussions with the international partners he referenced.
As of publication, neither Nation Media Group Uganda nor the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) had issued further statements confirming when broadcasting and publication would resume.
