Nup Marks Six Years Since Formation
KAMPALA, Uganda – National Unity Platform (NUP) has marked six years since it transformed from the People Power movement into a political party, with party leaders reflecting on its journey and calling on supporters to remain committed to their cause.
The anniversary event was held at the party’s base in Makerere Kavule, where NUP members gathered to celebrate the milestone and discuss the challenges and achievements of the organisation since its formation.
NUP said its leaders used the occasion to share personal experiences with supporters, encouraging them to remain focused on the party’s vision and political goals.
The party described the past six years as a period marked by both progress and difficulties, including political battles, arrests and pressure faced by some of its members.
According to NUP, the gathering was intended to motivate supporters and reinforce the belief that political change can be achieved through persistence.
NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, addressed supporters through a video message from the United States, where the party said he was carrying out political engagements.
Kyagulanyi urged members to remain united and resilient despite what he described as challenging political circumstances.
He warned supporters against being distracted by ongoing political tensions, including allegations of abductions involving opposition figures.
During his address, Bobi Wine highlighted the case of Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, the NUP Deputy President for Buganda Region and Butambala County MP, who remains missing nearly two weeks after he was allegedly intercepted following his release on bail.
NUP has repeatedly called for authorities to explain Kivumbi’s whereabouts, while police have said that if he is being held by any security agency, he will be produced before court at the appropriate time.
The allegations surrounding his detention have not been independently verified, and no security agency has publicly confirmed holding him.
National Unity Platform was launched in 2020 as the political wing of the People Power movement ahead of Uganda’s 2021 general election.
The party quickly became Uganda’s largest opposition force, winning a significant number of parliamentary seats and establishing itself as the main challenger to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Since then, NUP has continued to campaign on issues including governance, human rights, accountability and electoral reforms.
Government officials have maintained that security agencies operate within the law and that individuals facing criminal accusations are handled through established legal processes.
As NUP celebrates six years since its formation, party leaders say they remain committed to their political mission despite the challenges faced along the way.
Bobi Wine told supporters that determination and unity would be essential as the party continues its pursuit of what it describes as a more democratic and accountable Uganda.
