Police Recover 120 Suspected Stolen Iphones

KAMPALA, Uganda – Police in Kampala have recovered 120 suspected stolen iPhones and arrested four people accused of being involved in the possession and alleged dealing of stolen mobile devices.

The operation was conducted by officers from Katwe Police Station following investigations into the theft of a police officer’s phone in Kampala.

According to police, the investigation began after a mobile phone belonging to a police officer was stolen on 16 July 2026 while he was deployed on duty at Top City Plaza in Kisenyi Cell, Kampala.

Police spokesperson ACP Luke Owoyesigyire said investigations led officers to one of the suspects, identified as Mugabi Richard, who was arrested on 18 July 2026 at around 3:00am from his residence in Kakajo, Kisenyi Cell.

During questioning, police said Mugabi admitted to stealing the officer’s phone while the officer was resting inside a vehicle.

Following the arrest, police recovered a large number of suspected stolen devices and arrested three other suspects believed to be connected to the illegal trade.

Police said the recovered phones are undergoing verification to establish their ownership and identify possible victims.

The suspects are expected to face charges related to the possession and handling of suspected stolen property as investigations continue.

Authorities have previously raised concerns over organised networks involved in stealing, altering and reselling mobile phones.

Police investigations in previous cases have found that some stolen phones are modified by changing serial numbers, making it difficult for rightful owners to recover their devices.

Law enforcement agencies have encouraged members of the public to report stolen phones and provide identifying details such as serial numbers and purchase records to improve recovery efforts.

Police said investigations into the recovered phones and the suspects are ongoing.

The force is also working to identify more victims whose devices may be among those recovered during the operation.

Authorities have urged mobile phone users to remain vigilant and report suspicious dealers involved in the sale of suspected stolen devices.
