KAMPALA, Uganda
Prosecutors handling the treason case against opposition figure Dr Kizza Besigye and his aide, Obeid Lutale, have agreed to disclose details of six key witnesses, a development expected to advance the long-delayed proceedings.
According to court, the decision by the prosecution is aimed at facilitating the expeditious hearing of the main case.
The disclosure is part of ongoing pre-trial processes in a case that has drawn significant public attention due to the prominence of the accused and the political sensitivity surrounding treason-related charges in Uganda.
Dr Besigye, a veteran opposition leader, and his aide Lutale are facing allegations of treason, one of the most serious offences under Ugandan law, which carries severe penalties upon conviction. The specifics of the charges have been subject to legal proceedings in court, where both prosecution and defence teams are expected to present evidence and witness testimony.
The agreement to provide details of six key witnesses is expected to allow the defence adequate preparation time, a step legal observers say could help streamline the hearing process and reduce procedural delays.
While the court has not yet set out a detailed timeline for the main hearing, the development signals progress in a case that has been in preliminary stages for an extended period.
Both the prosecution and defence are expected to continue engaging on procedural matters as the case moves toward full trial.
