Museveni orders dismissal of six Works Ministry engineers
KAMPALA, Uganda – President Yoweri Museveni has ordered the dismissal of six engineers from Uganda’s Ministry of Works and Transport over their handling of major road infrastructure projects, a move announced by the Minister of State for Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, during a parliamentary committee session.
The announcement was made on Monday as Byamukama appeared before Parliament’s Committee on Physical Infrastructure, where he revealed that he had received the dismissal letter from the President earlier that morning.
Addressing lawmakers, Byamukama said the six engineers had accompanied him to Parliament for the committee meeting when he received the official communication ordering their dismissal.
“I received the dismissal letter this morning,” the minister told the committee, adding that the engineers had been relieved of their duties with immediate effect.
The identities of the affected engineers were not disclosed during the session.
Byamukama said the President’s decision was linked to the engineers’ handling of major road infrastructure projects under the Ministry of Works and Transport.
However, he did not specify which projects were involved or detail the alleged failures that prompted the dismissals.
It also remains unclear whether the decision followed internal investigations, performance assessments, or recommendations from government oversight agencies.
The revelation came as officials from the Ministry of Works and Transport appeared before the Committee on Physical Infrastructure, chaired by Hon. Mwine Mpaka, to respond to issues concerning the ministry’s work.
The committee is responsible for overseeing government programmes related to roads, bridges, transport services, and other public infrastructure projects.
The minister’s announcement immediately drew attention from legislators, as it came during an ongoing parliamentary review of infrastructure development and project implementation.
The dismissal comes amid growing government efforts to strengthen accountability in public infrastructure projects.
In recent years, concerns have been raised over delayed road works, escalating construction costs, poor workmanship, and the management of public funds allocated to infrastructure development.
President Museveni has repeatedly urged public officials to ensure value for money in government projects and warned against negligence, corruption, and abuse of office.
The government has also increased oversight through Parliament, the Inspectorate of Government, the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, and other accountability institutions to improve service delivery in the infrastructure sector.
The Ministry of Works and Transport is expected to issue further details regarding the dismissal of the six engineers, including their identities, positions, and how their responsibilities will be handled going forward.
Authorities are also expected to clarify whether additional disciplinary or legal action will follow if investigations establish wrongdoing in the management of the affected road projects.
