Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court has adjourned the misprision of treason case against former Kampala Lord Mayor and lawyer Erias Lukwago to July 7, 2026, after prison authorities informed the court that he was unable to appear because of ill health.

Lukwago was expected to appear before the court on Tuesday, but proceedings could not continue after officials from the Uganda Prisons Service reported that his medical condition prevented him from attending.

The court subsequently adjourned the matter to July 7.

Prison authorities failed to produce Lukwago in court due to his illness, while sources confirmed that the adjournment followed a communication from prison officials regarding his state of health.

Details about Lukwago’s medical condition were not immediately disclosed in court, and prison authorities have not publicly provided further information on the nature of his illness.

Lukwago is facing a charge of misprision of treason, an offence that relates to the alleged failure to report knowledge of a treasonous act to the relevant authorities. He has previously denied wrongdoing.

The case is one of several legal proceedings involving opposition figures currently before Ugandan courts.

Earlier on Tuesday, the High Court also scheduled the hearing of a bail application filed by opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and his aide, Hajj Obeid Lutale, for July 3.

Lukwago, who is also a member of Dr. Besigye’s legal team, has been at the centre of ongoing legal and political developments surrounding the opposition leader’s case.

The matter will return to the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court on July 7, when proceedings are expected to resume, subject to Lukwago’s health.
